Reprint Alert!

Advance copies of our ‘Pop-up and Play Farm’ just arrived from @nosycrow and this new edition will be available from March. I promise to do a slicker video nearer the time, but wanted to give you a sneak peek now.

Previously titled ‘Playbook Farm’ it’s a great favourite of ours, not least because the amazing illustrations were done by Britta @britta_teckentrup and we happened to be at college together at @csmgraphics

Last night was our MA(RCA) Visual Communication reunion

So good to see everyone and to discover that we are all still creating after thirty years! Missed not seeing Stefan, Michela, Al, Jake and Mags - see you next time ;)

I’ve just been archiving some of our projects and came across this one that I still have a soft spot for…

A simple idea by Sara Fenelli, but so beautifully illustrated and published by Phiadon.

Just before I finish up for the long weekend I was reminded of the day I met the King…
•
It was at The Artworker’s Guild, and others who were there that day included @fredbaier_com @theluminorsignco @benpentreath - who else was there? Can anyone remind me? 🤔

On my desk today: In response to a comment Lydia made on yesterday’s post this box is not what it seems. See second image…
•
I haven’t cut myself in years (touching wood as I type obvs) so this tin contains used blades instead.
•
@robryantown just posted his version, so has anyone else got something similar on their desk to share? #whereiputmyusedblades

On my desk today: I can’t show you what I’ve been working on just yet, but I can instead show you what I’ve been working with.
•
Here is one of my two trusty Swann-Morton scalpels that I cut everything out with. It’s in use so often it’s practically an additional limb. I know other paper engineers have their own favourites, but for me it will always and for ever be a Swann-Morton No.3 handle with a Surgical Scalpel Blade No.11
•
When I was a student 10A blades were recommended, but I’ve since graduated to the more elegant 11. I know that some paper engineers like to pad out their handles for comfort, but since I use mine like a pencil I’ve never felt the need. I also use (and this may be controversial) the reverse of the blade or the back end of the handle for making precise creases, although when I was at Van der Meer Books I was taught by Mark Hiner to use a blunt electrical screwdriver, which works just as well.
•
One day I promise I’ll be able to show you my latest projects, which are lying just out of shot, to the right and left of the screen… 😉

I was very sad to hear that Ron van der Meer died recently.
•
I simply wouldn’t have been a paper engineer without him. He hired me as a freelancer straight out of the RCA and I worked alongside him and Mark Hiner for six years. They taught me everything I know about pop-up books, he even drove me to my wedding in his classic Citroen.
•
Ron van der Meer was the first paper engineer to insist that adults could be as fascinated by pop-up books as children and his background, like mine, was in graphic design. Here is a small selection of the books the studio worked on between 1994 and 2000 - the glory days for pop-up books!
•
The first book I contributed to was ‘The Kids Art Pack’ (renamed ‘The Interactive Art Book’ in later print runs) and my first published pop-up was in ‘The Architecture Pack’.

Spent the morning naming the parts of a book with Brian Webb.
•
A much more challenging task than I thought it would be, with a seemingly endless number of arcane words and bits of a book. Watch this space…

When I was studying for my BA my personal tutor was the inimitable and unmistakeable @moragmyerscough so I was delighted to see her latest work glowing under a cornflower blue sky at @compton_verney today. Brava Morag 👏👏👏

Before I archive it I though you might like to see how much preliminary work goes into a pop-up book. These piles demonstrate the work needed to prepare eight sample spreads…

This is the last spread from ‘The Global Garden’ which seemed appropriate for spring. This has always been a popular pop-up. Simple but very effective. Shown left to right…
•
1) Final printed copy of the book
2) First black and white sketch dummy - to check art before the colour illustration started
3) Very, very early (butchered) white sample - sent to the printers for costing purposes. You can see that several elements were subsequently omitted due to costs, including a rather cool Venus fly trap mechanism under one of the small flaps which I’ll save for another time…
•
“The Global Garden” by Kate Petty. Illustrated by Jennie Maizels. Published by @edenprojectcornwall with @randomhousekids in 2005 (and designed by @rachelclarkart 😉)

Tremendously sad to hear that Jan Pieńkowski has died. Haunted House was part of my childhood and a milestone in the history of pop up books.
•
Though many people don’t realise that he didn’t actually do the paper engineering. That was conjured up by the paper-maestro Tor Lokvig. A wonderful example of how words, image and pop-ups can work in total harmony. Unforgettable.

An enjoyable day running a ‘Useful Parallels’ workshop for architecture students at the @artworkersguild and meeting more of my fellow brethren in the process. Thanks to all who took part - I hope it will indeed be useful.

I haven’t been asked to make something this big for a loooooooong while. Our ‘Time Pirates: Dinosaurs of Doom’ carousel book stands nearly 30cm tall and had moving parts, hidden secrets incorporated into the pop-up to find, two standalone 3D dinos, pop-out pieces and a six page storybook - that’s a lot of paper! @macmillankidsuk and @mikebrownlow were such fabulous collaborators to work with that we ended up doing a second in the series too.

In case you are interested, and I have never kept count, but these shelves hold a copy of every published book we’ve worked on and represent more than 20 years of work in publishing. There’s a separate (just as exciting) set of shelves/boxes for other non-book-based projects. So why on earth do I still get imposter syndrome? A common affliction no doubt...
