On my desk today: I can’t show you what I’ve been working on just yet, but I can instead show you what I’ve been working with.

Here is one of my two trusty Swann-Morton scalpels that I cut everything out with. It’s in use so often it’s practically an additional limb. I know other paper engineers have their own favourites, but for me it will always and for ever be a Swann-Morton No.3 handle with a Surgical Scalpel Blade No.11
•
When I was a student 10A blades were recommended, but I’ve since graduated to the more elegant 11. I know that some paper engineers like to pad out their handles for comfort, but since I use mine like a pencil I’ve never felt the need. I also use (and this may be controversial) the reverse of the blade or the back end of the handle for making precise creases, although when I was at Van der Meer Books I was taught by Mark Hiner to use a blunt electrical screwdriver, which works just as well.

One day I promise I’ll be able to show you my latest projects, which are lying just out of shot, to the right and left of the screen… 😉

I was very sad to hear that Ron van der Meer died recently.
•
I simply wouldn’t have been a paper engineer without him. He hired me as a freelancer straight out of the RCA and I worked alongside him and Mark Hiner for six years. They taught me everything I know about pop-up books, he even drove me to my wedding in his classic Citroen.
•
Ron van der Meer was the first paper engineer to insist that adults could be as fascinated by pop-up books as children and his background, like mine, was in graphic design. Here is a small selection of the books the studio worked on between 1994 and 2000 - the glory days for pop-up books!
•

This is the last spread from ‘The Global Garden’ which seemed appropriate for spring. This has always been a popular pop-up. Simple but very effective. Shown left to right…

1) Final printed copy of the book
2) First black and white sketch dummy - to check art before the colour illustration started
3) Very, very early (butchered) white sample - sent to the printers for costing purposes. You can see that several elements were subsequently omitted due to costs, including a rather cool Venus fly trap mechanism under one of the small flaps which I’ll save for another time…

Tremendously sad to hear that Jan Pieńkowski has died. Haunted House was part of my childhood and a milestone in the history of pop up books.

Though many people don’t realise that he didn’t actually do the paper engineering. That was conjured up by the paper-maestro Tor Lokvig. A wonderful example of how words, image and pop-ups can work in total harmony. Unforgettable.

Our ‘Time Pirates: Dinosaurs of Doom’ carousel book stands nearly 30cm tall and had moving parts, hidden secrets incorporated into the pop-up to find, two standalone 3D dinos, pop-out pieces and a six page storybook - that’s a lot of paper! @macmillankidsuk and @mikebrownlow were such fabulous collaborators to work with that we ended up doing a second in the series too.

I thought you’d like to see my first ever published pop-up... it’s a teeny-tiny model of a building with an intricate roof in the groundbreaking book ‘The Architecture Pack’.

I designed it not long after I’d left the @royalcollegeofart @rcavisualcomm and it was the first of several small pop-ups I did for the book. At the time I was lucky to work part time for Van der Meer Publishing and had the great good fortune to assist Mark Hiner on the pop-ups for the book, which was a collaboration with Deyan Sudjic (before he became the director of the @designmuseum) and even contained a cassette tape with an additional guided tour of the book narrated by Deyan.
